The programme lined up for this year’s festival was impressive. Equally impressive was Peter Cincotti who performed at the Esplanade.
Sadly, there was very little Jazz. He chose, instead, to showcase the new compositions from his latest album ‘East of Angel Town’. For some unexplained reason, the title immediately attracted my attention.
The songs from this David Foster’s production bring Cincotti back to his roots and the music he grew up with in the Big Apple. It is a mixture of rock n roll, rhythm and blues and funk.
There were some compelling pieces (songs like Goodbye Philadelphia, Broken Children, Another Falling Star, Always Watching You) that left me wondering where that force and energy originated. However, as he sang mostly new songs, some inevitably were unfamiliar to me and I guess, needed time for them to grow on me.
Even though the songs he sang were too new to be anyone’s favourite as yet, even though he did not sing his Jazz standards, he still managed to charm his way effortlessly to the hearts of his fans. Was it because of his coy mannerism or his BIG BIG voice?
Cincotti may not be as experienced a singer as Harry Cornick Jr (someone he has been compared to), nevertheless, he is still an entertaining singer who shows potential to be one of the great singers of this century.
By the way, did I mention that I brought home an autographed copy of his latest CD?

Wifey getting Peter's latest CD autographed by the 'man' himself. |
