New Yorkers are hard to grapple with and even more difficult to understand.
They are very ‘in the face’ sort of people and some of us may find them rather rude. And I guess that's what they mean by the 'New York attitude'. It needs some getting use to. For us, after a couple of days, we learnt to live with it and not let it bother us so much.
When approaching a New Yorker on the street for assistance, you can expect a rather abrupt response. They are just too busy to stop, show and tell. I don't think they ever have time to stop and smell the roses.
Are New Yorkers an aggressive lot? Much as I would like to come to their defence, I cannot deny the fact that they are indeed very aggressive! With 8.5 million people (not including couple more million illegal migrant populace), cramped mainly within the confines of Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens, the one lesson New Yorkers have learnt is not only to shout but to shout loud enough to be heard.
I am not saying that everyone’s like that; there are exceptions. They are the 'saving graces' that changed our view. There are ‘angels’ even in The Big Apple – once dubbed the city of sin and decadence.
The good news is, once you have grown accustomed to the 'NY attitude', the city sort of grows on you as it did on wifey and I. One can then so easily fall in love with the city that never sleeps.
The little pockets of parks and gardens and the city’s villages, each offering very distinctive flavours, add up to make this metropolis a most atmospheric, interesting and exciting place. And not forgetting, of course, that there are 'angels' alive in the midst of the hustle and bustle of The Big Apple.
If you can make here, you can make it anywhere ... New York, New York!
